NLP - The Power of Change Language

Can you remember a time when you heard someone speak with such precision, force and resonance that you have never forgotten their message?  Rudyard Kipling once said, “Words are the most powerful drug used by mankind.”  I remember hearing Mark Victor Hansen (co-author of the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" series) speak at an American Board of Hypnotherapy convention in the early 1990's.  I walked out of the room with about 400 other people, feeling like I was floating on a cloud several feet above the ground.  What was it about him, his words, his delivery, or his message that so touched me?  Thinking back, I get a feeling that tells me his message was much more powerful than the words he spoke.

How are you affected by the way in which you communicate with your own unconscious mind?  Do you always produce the result you want in your behaviors, your health, your performance, and your choices?  It is said that words are only 7% of our communication, with voice tonality being 38%, and body language making up the remaining 55%.  If the actual words you say are the least important element of your message, how can you be certain that you are conveying the intended message?  It is my belief and experience that the science of NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) holds the key to effective communication with self and others.

The meaning of the communication is in the response that you get!  This is one of the main teaching principles of NLP.  In “Frogs into Princes”, Richard Bandler and John Grinder (the originators of NLP) point out that you really only require three things to be an exquisite communicator:

1.      Know your desired outcome

2.      Be flexible in your behavior

3.      Have the sensory acuity to notice when you get the desired response

Most people have an idea of the outcome they want in any communication, whether it’s a sales presentation, a negotiation with a spouse, a job interview, or an internal dialogue for weight-loss.  Where they are lacking is in their flexibility to be able to generate enough different behaviors to elicit a variety of responses, or they have inadequate sensory acuity skills to recognize the meaning of the response.

The map is not the territory!  The words, images and ideas that we use to describe objects and experiences in life aren’t the actual objects or experiences.  They are our personal representation of those things, and vary from person to person based on how we communicate with our self.  This is sometimes where communication breaks down, because we assume that everyone perceives the world as we do.

You can change your history!  Even your very own past isn’t accurate in your memories.  It’s based on the state you were in at the time the event happened and changes with each episode of recall, colored by the state you are in every time you recall the memory.  With NLP you can learn to change your state on purpose and use various techniques to recall the event in that state, thereby changing your experience and emotions regarding the event.  Imagine a memory from your past that has always caused you anger, or fear, or any other negative emotion being transformed into a neutral memory that allows you to remain positive, powerful, and in control.

Sound fantastic?  It is not only fantastic, it is transformational.  NLP offers powerful tools for personal change and growth, as well as therapeutic tools for anyone doing counseling or coaching.  It teaches how to model excellence, control emotions and states, and overcome resistance and blocks to success.  I have found NLP to be an indispensable tool in my hypnotherapy practice and it has propelled my personal and financial growth into new dimensions.

NLP BY ANY OTHER NAME

In my interview with NLP guru Michael Watson last Thursday on - www.ThinkUPshow.com - Michael mentioned some of the other names that have spun off from the original Neuro Linguistic Programming which was created in the 1970's by John Grinder and Richard Bandler.  The same is true about Hypnosis, which has been called many other things throughout history.  Just the other day in a Self-Hypnosis training at the UP Hypnosis Institute, I took the attendees through a hypnotic process and when we finished one of the students said, "So, it's like visualization."  Well....yes, it IS visualizing, imagining, day-dreaming, or you may even say....pretending.  Does the word "placebo" apply?  We know that if you "believe" that something is happening, the body will release chemicals and hormones and substances with long names into the system and we will have a response.  Likewise, if we are really good at "pretending" that we believe something is happening, like I used to do when I was acting a part in a play or film, the body will also respond according to what is being imagined.

So, imagine what it would be like to pretend that you're happy and healthy and wealthy and wise.  As a matter of fact, let your mind create the YOU that you would like to be, and then simply pretend that you believe this is the real YOU, and visualize this YOU doing things you want to do and accomplishing all of the goals you have set for yourself.  If you do this for a month, I have a strong belief that YOU will be very different one month from now and I have a strong feeling that YOU will surprise your SELF - and I wonder what NAME will best describe the NEW YOU!

21 Days OR 21 Seconds? You choose.

Perhaps you have heard that it takes 21 days to anchor in a new behavior or habit. I know I have heard this and read this repetitively for most of my life, especially since I started getting interested in human behavior and the mind-body connection. When I read it yet again this morning in an e-mail from a holistic center attempting to give advice about how to reach your New Year’s resolutions/goals, a strange thought came to me in my half-awake state. It seems that the half-awake state, much like hypnosis, is a great state for the unconscious mind to give you thoughts unimpeded by the conscious mind.

Here is the thought:  We have been hypnotized, through repetition and belief, that it takes 21 days to create a new habit. Yet I know that I have worked with many clients and with myself to create a new thought, behavior or habit instantly. Therefore, if you change the belief and expectation, you change the experience. Why not condense the 21 day process into 21 seconds. This seemed too simple and logical when it popped into my head, and the more I now wake up into conscious thinking, the more I question the simplicity. So, I’ll STOP IT, and go with the original thought.

“From now on, I am catching myself anytime I read, hear, or repeat the previous Belief that had been reported as Fact that it takes 21 days to create a new habit, and I now intentionally choose to Believe and Expect that it only takes 21 seconds (or less)!”

I plan to repeat this mantra for 21 days. Oops, there goes that old habit again!

DO YOU FEEL LUCKY!

DO YOU FEEL LUCKY? Woke up this morning with the universe downloading (it happens a lot) the following: This year is about new beginnings, second chances, and confidently and fearlessly taking risks!

Good vibrational energy is definitely in the air the last couple of weeks because every time I go to a networking event I win something. In the past 2 weeks I won a beautiful Callaway golf bag, 2 bottles of wine, some beautiful covered fine-fashion CAbi clothes hangers, and $1600 worth of internet marketing classes from Phillip Black's Social Media Workshops (they're fabulous!). Now, I'm going to check my lotter tickets and prepare to write that book about "Using Hypnosis to Win the Lottery!"

DECIDE TO HAVE A LUCKY DAY!
